Is there a Kapwing video compressor alternative without a watermark or upload?

Published · Updated · By

Yes. Kapwing suits people who also want to edit, caption or collaborate, but its free compressor uploads the video to its cloud and watermarks free exports. To shrink a video with no watermark and no upload, use our free online video compressor in Chrome or Edge, or the OctoZip app on Android.

We make OctoZip and the online video compressor, so read this with that in mind. We're not connected with Kapwing. Every fact about Kapwing comes from its own website and help centre, checked on 1 November 2026, and is linked where it's used. Kapwing's pages don't all give the same figures; where they differ, we show both.

Kapwing and the alternatives side by side

The deciding differences are the watermark, the upload and how long your project is kept. Checked on 1 November 2026.

Kapwing's own pages disagree on several figures: the upload limit (250 MB in its FAQ and help centre, 2 GB in the pricing table), the export length (4 minutes on the pricing page, 1 minute in the subscription FAQ) free cloud storage (5 GB on the pricing page, 2 GB in its storage policy) and the paid export resolution (4K on the pricing page, 1080p HD in its upload help). The pricing table also lists 30 minutes of exports a month on the free plan. Plan around the lower figure until Kapwing settles it. OctoZip's facts come from its code and the compressor page.

What does Kapwing do better?

Kapwing is an editor first, and it shows. If you want more than a smaller file, it does things our tools don't:

  • Edit in the same place. The video opens in Kapwing Studio, where you can cut footage, crop, resize the canvas and add captions before you compress. Cutting the dead time is often the biggest saving of all. Our online compressor and the OctoZip app don't trim.
  • Import from a link. You can paste a link from Vimeo or TikTok instead of downloading the video first.
  • Work in a team. Kapwing is cloud based, so projects are reachable from any device and can be shared with a workspace.
  • No ads. Kapwing says it doesn't serve ads.
  • More formats in and out. It accepts MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI, MKV, WMV, FLV, MPEG, 3GP and OGG and exports MP4, MOV or WebM. Our online compressor reads MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV and writes MP4.
  • Your device can be slow. The work happens on Kapwing's servers, so an old laptop isn't the bottleneck; the upload is.

When is a Kapwing alternative the better choice?

When you only need a smaller file, and want it clean, private and sharp.

How much does the upload add?

With an uploading tool, the whole file has to travel before compressing starts. Upload time is size in MB × 8 ÷ upload speed in Mbps.

Worked example: one minute of 1080p phone video at 17 Mbps with 192 kbps sound is about 129 MB ((17 + 0.192) × 60 ÷ 8 = 128.9). On a 10 Mbps upload, that's 129 × 8 ÷ 10 = 103 seconds, about 1 minute 43 seconds before Kapwing can work on it. The same video also tells you how far the free limits stretch: 250 MB holds about 250 × 8 ÷ 17.192 = 116 seconds of it, just under 2 minutes; 2 GB would hold about 15 minutes.

In our online compressor, the same minute never leaves your device. Its own plan for that video, worked out by its code before compressing:

SettingResolutionEstimated size
High quality1920 × 1080About 47 MB
Target size 25 MB1280 × 720About 24 MB
Medium960 × 540About 12 MB

Estimates for 129 MB of 1080p at 30 fps; real results vary with what's in the picture. Try your own numbers in the upload time calculator.

How do I compress a video in Kapwing?

Upload, set the compression in Export settings, then export. These steps follow Kapwing's Compress Video page:

  1. Open Kapwing's Compress Video tool and upload the video from your computer, or paste a link from Vimeo or TikTok. Sign in first if the video is private.
  2. The video opens in Kapwing Studio. Trim or crop it here if you like.
  3. In the export settings, choose a resolution or leave it on Auto, then drag the Compression Level slider, watching the estimated file size.
  4. Export as MP4, MOV or WebM and download it. On the free plan, the export carries Kapwing's watermark.

How do I compress without uploading or a watermark?

Use our free online video compressor in recent Chrome or Edge, on a phone or a computer.

Compress for Discord in your browser

  1. Open the online video compressor and tap Choose a video.
  2. Pick High quality to keep the resolution, Medium or Small file for a smaller copy, or Target size for a size in MB. Each shows an estimate first.
  3. Tap Compress video, play the result, then Download it.

The button above opens it set to 20 MB, the free Discord limit; settings for other apps work the same way. It does one video at a time, up to about 1–2 GB, and doesn't trim: cut the video first in your phone's gallery or another editor if it's too long.

On an Android phone, the OctoZip app compresses on the phone with no connection needed. Tap Pick a video, choose Small file (easy share), Medium file or Best Quality, tap Start Compression, then Compare the copy with the original before you save it. The app has no target size in MB and no trim; batch compression, files over 3 GB and 8K sources need OctoZip Pro, and free users see a full-screen Pro offer after every second saved video. It runs on Android 7.0 or later.

Questions people ask

Is Kapwing's video compressor free?

Yes, it's free for all users, but free exports carry a watermark and are limited to 720p. Kapwing Pro removes the watermark for $16 a member a month billed yearly ($192 a year), or $24 billed monthly; Kapwing says it offers no free trial and no refunds on subscriptions.

How do I remove the Kapwing watermark?

Kapwing's answer is to upgrade: Pro exports have no watermark. If all you need is a smaller file, a compressor that adds no watermark, like ours, avoids the question.

How long does Kapwing keep my video?

On the free plan, projects older than 3 days are deleted and can't be restored, and uploads not linked to any project are removed after 30 days. Download your export soon after you make it.

Is there a Kapwing app for Android?

Kapwing's FAQ says it doesn't currently offer an Android or iOS app and that an earlier Android app is no longer available; on a phone, it runs in the browser.

  • We didn't run videos through Kapwing or compare picture quality. Its figures come from its pages; ours are the compressor's own estimates.
  • Kapwing's pages gave different free-plan limits on 1 November 2026. Check its pricing page before a big job.
  • Kapwing's AI and team features are outside this page; it compares compressing only.
  • Our online compressor does one video at a time, up to about 1–2 GB, in recent Chrome and Edge. The OctoZip app has no size-in-MB option and no trim.
