Clideo video compressor: is it safe, and what's the alternative?
Clideo says files travel over secure channels and are later deleted from its servers, with no fixed time given. Its free compressor takes files up to 500 MB and adds a watermark. To skip the upload and the watermark, use our free online video compressor; Clideo suits quick jobs with no account.
We make OctoZip and the online video compressor, so read this with that in mind. We're not connected with Clideo (Clideo Ltd, Cyprus). Every fact about Clideo comes from its own website, help centre, terms and privacy policy, checked on 1 November 2026 with prices as listed in US dollars that day, and is linked where it's used. We didn't upload a video to Clideo for this page.
Clideo and the alternatives side by side
Clideo's free plan is limited by file size, resolution and the watermark; its Pro plan lifts all three. Checked on 1 November 2026.

Is Clideo safe to use?
Here is what Clideo itself says; we haven't audited it. Clideo says your files move "via secure channels" and that "high-level encryption ensures you are the only one who can access your files before they're deleted from our server". How long that is depends on who you are:
- Visitors (no account): "Projects are not stored."
- Free registered users: projects from the last 14 days stay open; older ones are locked.
- Everyone: the privacy policy says uploaded content is "retained as needed to provide the relevant project or feature", without a number of hours or days. Clideo also says it is "not a cloud storage service", so download your result.
The trade-off is the same for any upload-based tool: a copy of your video sits on someone else's server for a while, under that company's rules. Clideo is run by Clideo Ltd in Nicosia, Cyprus. If the video is private, a compressor that works on your own device avoids the question. More on what to check in is it safe to use a video compressor app?
What does Clideo do better?
- No account, no install. Visitors can compress without an account, on a phone or a computer browser.
- Sound options. You can keep the sound as it is, remove it, or compress it (compressing it needs Pro). Our online compressor keeps or re-encodes it, but can't remove it.
- More input formats. Clideo names MP4, WMV, MOV, VOB and AVI "and more rare ones as well". Ours reads MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV.
- Files from the cloud. You can pick a video from Google Drive, Google Photos or Dropbox.
- Other tools on the same site. Clideo's help centre lists its other video tools next to Compress Video, and its own advice for a video that is still too big is to cut it into parts. Our tools only compress.
- Very large files on Pro. Up to 100 GB a file and 4K exports.
How much video fits under Clideo's free 500 MB?
About 3 minutes 53 seconds of typical 1080p phone video, or about a minute and a half of 4K. Length (seconds) = size (MB) × 8 ÷ bitrate (Mbps).
| Video | 500 MB (Clideo free) | 1 GB (our online compressor, lower end) | 3 GB (OctoZip app, free) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 17 Mbps, 192 kbps sound | 3 min 53 s | 7 min 45 s | 23 min 16 s |
| 4K at 45 Mbps, 192 kbps sound | 1 min 29 s | 2 min 57 s | 8 min 51 s |
For example, 500 × 8 ÷ 17.192 = 232.7 seconds, and 500 × 8 ÷ 45.192 = 88.5 seconds. We use 17 Mbps for 1080p phone video across our examples, and 45 Mbps, the top of YouTube's recommended range for 4K at 30 fps; your phone's rates may differ. Our online compressor works with videos of about 1–2 GB on most phones and computers, so the 1 GB column is the cautious figure.
How do I compress a video for email with each?
Clideo's own advice for email is to "choose the preset that gives the smallest file size or cut your video into several parts", because its expected size is an estimate, not a target. Ours lets you set the size.
Worked example: a 3-minute 1080p phone video of about 387 MB ((17 + 0.192) × 180 ÷ 8). Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo stop at 25 MB (email attachment limits), and attachments grow by about a third when they're sent, so our email setting aims under 18 MB (why 18 MB). For this video the compressor plans 640 × 360 at about 0.7 Mbps, with the sound re-encoded at 64 kbps to make room, about 17 MB. That's an estimate from its planning code before it starts; real results vary with the picture.
Compress for email in your browser
In our online compressor
- Open the compressor with the button above, in recent Chrome or Edge, and tap Choose a video.
- Check the estimate under the email setting, or pick another Target size.
- Tap Compress video, keep the tab open, then Download the MP4 and attach it.
On Clideo
From Clideo's help page on compressing:
- Open clideo.com/compress-video and choose a file up to 500 MB from your device, or from Google Drive, Google Photos or Dropbox.
- Pick a compression option (free accounts get Basic) and choose whether to keep or remove the sound.
- Check the expected size, compress, and download the result. On the free plan it carries the watermark and comes out at up to 720p.
- If it's still over 25 MB, Clideo suggests a smaller preset or cutting the video into parts.
Compress Video has no autosave, so download the result before you close the page.
When is a Clideo alternative the better choice?
- A clean copy, free. Clideo's free exports carry a watermark that it can't remove later from a downloaded video. Ours add none.
- 1080p or higher, free. Free Clideo exports are 480p or 720p; our High quality keeps the original resolution.
- A video over 500 MB, which is about four minutes of 1080p (table above).
- A hard limit, such as 25 MB for email or 20 MB for Discord, where an estimate that is "not 100% guaranteed" means trying again.
- A private video you'd rather not upload at all.
What about Android?
Clideo's Android page says you can "compress videos directly from your mobile browser without any extra apps"; that is its Android route. Our online compressor works the same way in Chrome on Android, without uploading. For phone videos you compress often, OctoZip, our app, works without an internet connection and lets you compare the copy with the original:
- Install OctoZip from Google Play and tap Pick a video.
- Choose Small file (easy share), Medium file or Best Quality, then tap Start Compression.
- Tap Compare, then Save compressed video or Replace the original.
OctoZip is free with no ads and no watermark. It has no target size in MB and no trim; batch compression, files over 3 GB and 8K sources need OctoZip Pro, and free users see a full-screen Pro offer after every second saved video. It runs on Android 7.0 or later.
Questions people ask
Is Clideo free?
Its compressor is free for files up to 500 MB, with a watermark and exports at 480p or 720p. Clideo Pro costs $12 a month, or $108 a year, and removes the watermark.
Can I remove the Clideo watermark from a video I already downloaded?
No. Clideo says it "cannot remove the Clideo watermark" from videos already made and downloaded on a free account. Compress the original again with a tool that adds none.
Does Clideo need an account?
Not to compress: "There is no need to have an account for compression". A free account keeps your projects for 14 days.
Why is Clideo's result a different size from the estimate?
Clideo says its expected size and compression ratio "are preliminary estimations and are not 100% guaranteed". Every compressor estimates, because detail in the picture changes how much space it needs. Ours aims about 5% under the size you type and makes a second pass if the copy still comes out over.
What this page doesn't cover
- We didn't upload a video to Clideo or compare picture quality. Everything about Clideo comes from its own pages.
- Clideo's prices and limits change; these are as listed on 1 November 2026, in US dollars.
- The lengths in the table are arithmetic from stated bitrates, not measurements.
- Our online compressor does one video at a time, up to about 1–2 GB, in recent Chrome or Edge; it can't trim or remove the sound. The OctoZip app has no size-in-MB option.
