Is there a FreeConvert video compressor alternative that doesn't upload?
Yes. FreeConvert's compressor uploads your video to its servers and caps free files at 1 GB. If you'd rather not upload, our free online video compressor works inside Chrome or Edge, and the OctoZip app does the same on Android. FreeConvert suits big batches, unusual formats and H.265 output.
We make OctoZip and the online video compressor, so read this with that in mind. We're not connected with FreeConvert or its owner, TRMedia Inc. Every fact about FreeConvert comes from its own website and its Google Play listing, checked on 1 November 2026 with prices as listed in US dollars that day, and is linked where it's used.
FreeConvert and the alternatives side by side
The real split is where the work happens: on FreeConvert's servers, or on your own phone or computer. Checked on 1 November 2026.

FreeConvert facts are linked in each cell. "Conversion minutes", in FreeConvert's words, "measure how long it takes to convert your files on our servers", so they count processing time, not the length of your video. OctoZip's facts come from its code and the compressor page.
What does FreeConvert do better?
Settings and formats. If your files aren't private and your connection is fast, FreeConvert gives you more control than our online compressor:
- Five ways to compress. Its settings offer a target size as a percentage or in MB, a target quality, a target resolution or a maximum bitrate. Ours has presets, a target size in MB and a resolution choice.
- H.265 on the free plan. FreeConvert says H.265 "can reduce file size 20-75% more than H.264"; our online compressor writes H.264 only, which plays almost everywhere but makes bigger files.
- More input formats. It accepts more than 30 file types, including AVI, WMV, FLV, VOB and MXF. Ours reads MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV.
- Files from the cloud. You can pick a video from Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or a link without downloading it first.
- Extras. Subtitles (burned in or soft), resolutions from 144p up to 8K, and settings you can save as your own preset.
- A slow device doesn't matter. The servers do the work, so an old laptop finishes as fast as a new one once the upload is done. Paid plans run 100 conversions at a time.
When is a FreeConvert alternative the better choice?
When the video is private, when the upload is the slow part, or when the file is bigger than the free 1 GB.
- Private videos. FreeConvert stores uploaded and converted files on Amazon Web Services in Ireland and deletes them after 8 hours. That is a clear rule, but it still means a copy leaves your device. Family videos, patients, clients and unreleased work can stay on your phone or computer instead.
- A slow upload. The whole original has to reach FreeConvert before it can shrink; the worked example below shows what that costs.
- Big phone videos. The free plan stops at 1 GB a file, and 4K fills that quickly.
- Many short jobs in one day. Free use is 20 conversion minutes a day and 5 a file. Our online compressor and the app have no daily allowance, because your own device does the work.
How long does the upload take?
Often longer than the compressing: the whole original has to reach the servers before anything starts. Upload time (seconds) = file size (MB) × 8 ÷ upload speed (Mbps).
| Video | Size | At 10 Mbps up | At 2 Mbps up | Under FreeConvert's free 1 GB? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 minutes of 1080p at 17 Mbps | 387 MB | 310 s, about 5 minutes | 1,548 s, about 26 minutes | Yes |
| 3 minutes of 4K at 45 Mbps | 1,017 MB | 814 s, about 14 minutes | 4,068 s, about 68 minutes | No, just over |
Sizes include 192 kbps of stereo sound: (17 + 0.192) × 180 ÷ 8 = 387 MB, and (45 + 0.192) × 180 ÷ 8 = 1,017 MB. 45 Mbps is the top of YouTube's recommended range for 4K at 30 fps; your phone's rate may differ. The upload times are 387 × 8 ÷ 10 = 309.6 and 387 × 8 ÷ 2 = 1,548 seconds, and 1,017 × 8 ÷ 10 = 813.6 and 1,017 × 8 ÷ 2 = 4,068 seconds. At 45 Mbps, 1 GB holds about 1,000 × 8 ÷ 45.2 = 177 seconds, so a 4K clip longer than about 3 minutes is over the free cap. Try your own numbers in the upload time calculator.
With our online compressor the upload step is zero: the browser reads the file from your device. For the same 3-minute 1080p video, the compressor's own plan with the WhatsApp setting (under 64 MB at 720p) is 1280 × 720 at about 2.5 Mbps with the sound kept, about 61 MB. That is an estimate worked out by its code before it starts; real results vary with what's in the picture.
How do I compress a video on FreeConvert?
Upload the file, choose how to compress, then download the result before it's deleted. From FreeConvert's compressor page:
- Open freeconvert.com/video-compressor and choose a file up to 1 GB from your device, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or a link.
- Open the settings and pick a method. The default options compress "video size by 40%", in FreeConvert's words; choose Target a file size (MB) for a limit such as 25 MB.
- Leave the codec on H.264 for the widest playback, or choose H.265 for a smaller file that some older devices can't play.
- Start the compression, wait for the upload and processing, then download the new file. FreeConvert deletes files within 8 hours.
How do I compress without uploading?
Use our free online video compressor in recent Chrome or Edge, on a phone or a computer. This button opens it set for WhatsApp: under 64 MB at 720p.
Compress for WhatsApp in your browser
- Tap Choose a video. The page reads the size, length and resolution from your device.
- Keep the WhatsApp setting, or pick Small file, Medium, High quality or another Target size. Each shows an estimate before you start.
- Tap Compress video and keep the tab open until it finishes.
- Play the new copy on the page, then tap Download, or Share on a phone.
It does one video at a time, up to about 1–2 GB, and always makes an MP4. Safari is slower and sometimes stops part way; Chrome and Edge are what it's made for. Once the page has loaded it works with the connection off.
What about FreeConvert's Android app?
FreeConvert's company also publishes Video Compressor - ShrinkVid on Google Play, and, unlike the website, its listing says "compression is done on your device". On 1 November 2026 the listing showed 100K+ downloads, 4.7 stars from 5.37K reviews, "Contains ads" and in-app purchases of $2.99–$11.99 per item, and a last update on 27 October 2025. It lists a custom size, batch compression and compress-and-replace.
OctoZip, our Android app, has no ads and also compresses on the phone, works without an internet connection, and lets you compare the copy with the original before you save it. ShrinkVid has far more downloads and reviews (OctoZip has 500+ downloads and no rating yet), and it lists a custom size, which OctoZip lacks, and batch compression, which is part of OctoZip Pro.
- Install OctoZip from Google Play and tap Pick a video.
- Choose Small file (easy share), Medium file or Best Quality, then tap Start Compression.
- Tap Compare, then Save compressed video, or Replace the original.
The app has no target size in MB and no trim. Batch compression, files over 3 GB and 8K sources need OctoZip Pro, and free users see a full-screen Pro offer after every second saved video. It runs on Android 7.0 or later.
Questions people ask
Is FreeConvert's video compressor free?
Yes, within limits: files up to 1 GB, 20 conversion minutes a day and 5 a file, with ads and a queue, and no account needed. Paid plans start at $12.99 a month, or $10.83 a month paid yearly.
How long does FreeConvert keep my video?
Up to 8 hours. Its privacy policy says uploaded files "are automatically and permanently deleted after 8 hours", and you can delete them yourself sooner. Files go over a 256-bit SSL connection, according to its home page.
Does FreeConvert add a watermark?
Its compressor and pricing pages, checked on 1 November 2026, don't mention a watermark either way, so we can't say. Our online compressor adds none.
Can I compress a video to an exact size on FreeConvert?
Yes: choose Target a file size (MB) in its settings. Our online compressor has the same idea as Target size: it aims about 5% under the size you type and, if the copy still comes out over, makes it once more at a lower bitrate. More in compressing to a specific size.
What this page doesn't cover
- We didn't upload a video to FreeConvert or time it. Everything about it comes from its own pages and listing.
- FreeConvert's prices and allowances change; these are as listed in US dollars on 1 November 2026.
- The upload times are arithmetic for a steady connection. Real uploads vary, and the result still has to download.
- Our online compressor does one video at a time, up to about 1–2 GB, in recent Chrome or Edge. The OctoZip app has no size-in-MB option.
